A North Carolina mother was arrested Wednesday in the May 9 death of her infant son after police determined she left the child while she was at work in Suffolk.
Suffolk Police said officers were dispatched to an area hospital at 3:45 p.m. May 9 in response to a 5-month-old male infant who was pronounced deceased after arriving with his mother.
Through the investigation, Suffolk Police said in a news release, they were able to determine that the infant had been left in a car for an unknown period of time. After an extensive investigation, it was determined the mother of the child, Taina Sanford, 21, of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, knowingly left the child in the vehicle unattended while she worked.
On June 21, police charged Sanford with felony murder, child abuse and child endangerment. She is currently held at Western Tidewater Regional jail without bond.
The Virginia Judiciary Online Case information System shows Sanford’s arraignment on the charges in Suffolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Thursday, June 22 was continued. No date is shown for when that arraignment will be held.
